Keys To Understanding Life is a Christ-following organization. Our mission is...

...to assist believers in consistently discerning God’s guidance, counsel and direction to them during ANY trial they experience, and to assist Churches in growing the discipleship arm of their ministries.
— Keys Mission Statement

Notice that this mission statement involves the one thing we pray most often for when times are tough... "What do you want me to do with THIS situation, Lord?!" Figuring out the need-to-know answer to that question requires discernment. Learning discernment is a part of discipleship that goes beyond the elementary things of Christ.

Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of instruction about washings and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment, and this we will do, if God permits.
— Hebrews 6:1-3 NASB

These verses talk about going "beyond the elementary teachings of Christ." This is talking about the aspect of discipleship which is "beyond the basics of Christ."

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
— Maimonides - Jewish philosopher
Discipleship in the basics is like giving a fish to a person. This is a vital part of being discipled, but it is only part of discipleship.

Discipleship "in the basics"

Many ministries and Christian organizations focus on the essential aspect of discipleship which is "in the basics." For example: salvation, the concept of sin, faith in God through Christ, eternal life - these are mentioned in the verses (Hebrews 6:1-3) above. But, basic discipleship also includes things like: learning about the Bible and how to use it, most Bible studies, listening to sermons, going to Sunday School, etc.

All of these "elementary teachings" are HUGELY important. When Keys trains in discipleship beyond the basics, we will often touch on some discipleship in the basics, depending on a person's need. Both aspects of discipleship are vital to walking with Christ daily, especially in trials! However, Keys was founded in 2006 specifically to offer discipleship training in the "beyond the basics" department.

Discipleship beyond the basics is like teaching a person to fish for themselves. The concept is that a person learns to discern the Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit) for themselves.

discipleship "beyond the basics"

Discipleship beyond the basics is about how Christ seeks to grow us through life difficulties, trials, tough times, unpleasant times... whatever you want to call them. It involves how to discern how the flesh, the evil in this world and/or Satan work to attack Christ in us in a trial. It involves discerning the Holy Spirit's guidance to us during a trial. It also involves how to discern what God is seeking to teach you with the trial. It involves discerning how the Lord wants to transform and grow you in the trial. It involves discerning the steps the Lord wants you to take in response to the trial. These things deal with discipleship beyond the basics.

When Keys assists a person in applying the Bible's principles for discerning God's guidance in a specific trial - to us that's like "giving them a fish." While the Lord uses us to assist others, the Lord's purpose is for the person to learn how to consistently discern the Spirit of the Lord for them selves - to us, this is like "teaching him/her to fish!"

Here at Keys, we don't want a believer to be dependent on us in order to discern what Christ and His Holy Spirit is trying to communicate to that person in their trial. That's not how their personal relationship with Christ should work. Our role is to assist a person in growing so they don't need us to help them meet their discernment needs... other than perhaps to simply be an encouragement to them.

Because of Jesus' sacrifice, each believer has God's Holy Spirit seeking to teach them everything they need to follow Christ during a trial. Therefore, our simple role at Keys is to walk with believers for a while and assist in training them in the "how to" of discerning the Holy Spirit's voice in their heart!
